1988 or older vehicles
For cars manufactured in 1988 or earlier any model can be imported, and there are no restrictions on previous accident history or modifications as long as it meets roadworthy and registration standards. An import approval application must be made with DOTARS, which J-Spec will assist with.
1988 and older vehicles do require compliance however the regulations are nowhere near as strict as under SEVS, and the work can be done by anyone provided an engineer signs off on the compliance work. For a 1988 or older vehicle compliance typically costs around $500 - $1,300 depending on the car and the state, and the car must meet the Australian Design Rules for its date of manufacture. This means that for example a 1975 built vehicle must meet the ADR's for 1975, which were fairly minimal and so compliance for such a car would tend to be easier and cheaper.
