2001 Toyota Chaser Tourer V

Hey Ben,

I've had the chaser up in Townsville since Friday 3rd July. Ended up costing about $xx,xxx landed and complied, pretty much spot on your estimate, and nicely under my budget; happy on both accounts there.

Paint looks good considering its age/kms, looks as you described/the pictures showed. It runs beautifully and sounds great with the exhaust it has on it.

Anyway, thank you, Ben, for all your great service in getting the chaser from Japan to me. I hope to enjoy driving it until the end of its days.

Nissan Leaf (AZE0)

The Nissan Leaf is a fully electric vehicle (EV) with an electric motor and battery as the source of power instead of an internal combustion engine. Introduced in 2010, importable models are the minor revision AZE0 version from June 2013 to September 2017, these had a few improvements and fixes over the Leafs sold in Australia from 2010 - 2013. Importable Japanese Leafs have a number of changes over Australian delivered models with an 80kg weight reduction by use of aluminium panels, and the battery life was improved. They also have better boot space, a better heater, hill start assist, heated seatas and steering wheel, and an improved regenerative braking mode.

The Leaf is the world's best selling highway speed capable electric vehicle with 300,000 units sold worldwide for this particular variant, and it was the winner of 2011 - 2012 Car of the Year in Japan, 2011 World Car of the Year, 2011 European Car of the year, and the 2010 Green Car Vision Award. The Leaf was sold throughout the world so parts availability and information is easy to come by, and depending on the price of electricity, running costs are 3 to 5 times cheaper than a comparable internal combustion engine powered car as not only are you not spending money on petrol but aside from tyres and brakes EV's have almost no regular maintenance requirements.

As with all electric vehicles the motor is very smooth and very quiet, and the battery location of the Leaf creates a low centre of gravity which makes for excellent handling characteristics. The engine produces 90kW at peak power with a very high torque figure of 290Nm which is characteristic of electric vehicles, and the top speed is 150km/h.

The Lithium Ion battery is charged via a port at the front of the car between the headlights via either normal or rapid charge modes. Rapid charge can fill the battery to 80% capacity within 30 minutes at a charge station, and a 10 minute charge can give a 50km range boost. Charging from a regular wall socket will go from completely empty to a full charge overnight, the charge time can be halved if you have a higher capacity charger installed at home. All Leafs have a built in charge timer that allows you to set the car to only charge itself in off peak times, saving you money. The battery is also be charged via regenerative braking modes while driving.

EV batteries have come a long way in recent years and the Leaf 24kWh battery is expected to retain 80% of it's total charge capacity after 10 years. After 5 years of use Nissan reports only 0.1% of batteries have encountered failures, and even some of those were due to external damage. There are many Leafs out there with over 200,000km still performing fine on their original battery without issue. It is important to note that the optional 30kWh batteries have been shown to degrade significantly faster than the standard 24kWh battery.

The Leaf has a 24kWh battery as standard, for 2016+ models there was a slightly larger optional 30kWh battery with an extra 20% range. According to the very generous Japanese JC08 testing standard the range is quoted as 228km, under US EPA testing standards (more realistic in the real world) it is quoted at 135km. The slightly larger 30kWh battery has a range of 280km under JC08, or 172km under US EPA standards.

For safety the Leaf has a Euro NCAP 5 star rating with stability control, traction control, braking assist, electronic braking distribution, and dual airbags all as standard, and optional automated emergency braking and lane departure warning system on later models. Other standard and optional features of note include BOSE sound system, 4 camera 360 degree around view system, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, cruise control and smart key access.
