Toyota Prius (NHW10)

A car that perhaps history will remember as being one of the most influential of all time, in 1997 the first generation Prius was released bringing the Hybrid concept to the masses. By utilizing a combination of conventional petrol engine with an electric motor the Prius gets vastly improved fuel economy by relying on the electric battery under light load conditions, and the petrol engine only kicking in when more power is needed. The battery is then charged by unused power from the petrol engine or via regenerative braking, and efficiency was improved further with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The magic figure for the Prius is of course fuel economy; Toyota quotes it at 28km/l (or 3.5l / 100km). Power from the petrol engine is 43kW (58hp) with the electric engine bringing a further 30kW (40hp) to the package. In cabin the power distribution between the two engines and battery can be seen on a monitor which also allows for mode selection such as if regenerative braking is to be used. Dual airbags, ABS brakes, climate control and full electrics are all standard.
