Toyota Alphard hybrid and Vellfire hybrid (AYH30 series)
The hybrid 30 series Alphard and Vellfire (the same vehicle with slightly different front and rear body styling) was released in 2015 and sets the standard for high end luxury people movers in Japan. The top spec versions of these cars really are the pinnacle of what technology and luxury can be packed into these vehicles, and even the base spec models are extremely well appointed.
The hybrid drive technology combines a 2.5L Atkinson cycle petrol engine with electric motors to provide official fuel economy figures of 19.4km/L (5.2L / 100km) which is impressive for a car of this size. The petrol engine delivers 150hp (113kw) through a 6 speed tiptronic transmission, which is then supplemented with an additional 105kW of electric power through the front wheels, and an additional 50kW to the rear wheels. This puts peak combined power at an impressive 267kW, a figure many sports cars can only aspire to! There is also a full Electic Vehicle (EV) mode if you wish to drive on electric power alone.
Compared with the previous model the suspension and chassis have been revamped for a more luxurious ride, and sound deadening has also been increased. New to the 30 series models are a 4 camera Panoramic View Monitor which allows for a variety of viewing modes, including a 3D view of the car with the surroundings viewable from any angle, and a See Through View where you can see angles through the car as though it were transparent.
There is also a new version of Intelligent Parking Assist which detects parking spaces and obstacles using the various cameras and sonar sensors which automatically turns the steering wheel to park automatically. This works for both parallel and regular reverse in parking spaces, and can also be used to leave a parking space.
The second row of seats have a number of high end options allowing for various power adjustments, fold out ottoman-style foot rests, they can be heated and cooled, have fold out tables, different lighting options, regrigerated drink boxes and sunshades. Features typical of modern luxury vehicles such as triple zone climate control, smart key access, push button start, power sliding doors, power tailgate, a 17 speaker JBL sound system, adjustable colour and brightness LED illumination system, dual sunroofs and radar cruise control are all available features.
Safety features include 7 airbags (two front, four side, one knee), braking assist, anti-lock brakes, electronic braking distribution, stability control, and traction control. There is also a collision avoidance system where the car will not allow you to hit nearby objects, and it will automatically apply the brakes to avoid hitting a vehicle in front.
The seats have long tracks to allow for significant movement back and forth to adjust for passenger leg room or to allow carrying larger cargo, and the third row of seats can also fold up to allow for even greater storage space.
The Vellfire and Alphard are effectively the same vehicles with different exterior styling, the Alphard has a more luxuriously styled exterior, while the Vellfire has a sportier look.
